Landini-Bombardieri: A Rally for Rights and Salaries on April 20th
“Enough is enough!” This is the call from Cgil and Uil, who are urging people to gather in Rome on April 20th for a national demonstration on health and safety, the right to healthcare, tax reform, and protection of salaries. The meeting point is at 9:30 am at Circo Massimo, in the Ugo La Malfa square.
The march will begin at Viale Aventino at 10:30 am and will conclude at Piazzale Ostiense, where the general secretaries of Cgil and Uil, Maurizio Landini and Pierpaolo Bombardieri, will deliver speeches. In the square, 20 booths will be set up, one for each region, showcasing the issues faced by different regional healthcare systems.
“We need to take to the streets and mobilize to obtain these rights, starting with the right to secure employment, healthcare, social justice, and education, which remain our strategic objectives,” Landini said during the press conference. “This year is contract renewal year. 12 million people have this issue at hand, and for us, this season should bring a real increase in wages, both in the public and private sectors,” he added.
“The issues addressed in this mobilization – stated Uil’s general secretary, Pierpaolo Bombardieri – also concern the right to healthcare, the desire to have a healthcare system as outlined in the constitution: universal and free.”
Bombardieri points out that Italy currently lacks 30 thousand doctors, 80 thousand nurses, and 70 thousand healthcare workers. Over the past decade, 125 hospitals have closed down in Italy, accounting for 12% of all hospitals. According to data from Gimbe, 2 million citizens are no longer seeking medical treatment due to financial reasons.
