Colleagues and friends commemorate the psychiatrist killed a year after her death
One year after the attack that led to the death of 55-year-old psychiatrist Barbara Capovani, her colleagues and closest friends wanted to remember her with a minute of silence and the laying of flowers during a brief ceremony in front of the Diagnostic and Treatment Psychiatric Service of Pisa in Northwest Tuscany, where Dr. Capovani worked and was attacked on April 21, 2023.

Simona Elmi, psychiatrist, collaborator, and friend of Dr. Capovani, recalled that day and emphasized “the void that her disappearance left in her patients, colleagues, and the entire healthcare community, not only in Pisa, cannot be filled except through remembering and continuing the many projects she had initiated. On this day, we wanted to meet with the people closest to her to partially alleviate the sadness that has accompanied us for an entire year, and today the pain is even more intense because the memories are still very vivid.”

Representatives from the Local Health Authority (ASL) who attended the ceremony included Laura Guerrini, director of social services, Cristina Laddaga, director of the Society of Health, and Angelo Cerù, director of the Mental Health Department of the healthcare company.

The trial for voluntary manslaughter of Capovani is currently underway against one of her former patients, Gianluca Paul Seung, who is currently in custody.

The death of Barbara Capovani was a tragedy that shocked not only her colleagues and friends but also the entire medical community. It serves as a grim reminder of the risks that healthcare professionals face every day while performing their duties. Dr. Capovani was not only a skilled psychiatrist but also a compassionate individual who dedicated her life to helping others overcome their mental health struggles.

Her loss has been deeply felt by her patients, who relied on her expertise and guidance. Her absence has left a void that cannot be easily filled, and the impact of her work will be sorely missed.

However, her colleagues and friends are determined to honor her memory by continuing the projects she started. Dr. Capovani was known for her innovative approach to mental health treatment and her commitment to improving the lives of her patients. Her legacy will be carried on by those who have been inspired by her dedication and compassion.

The ceremony held in front of the Diagnostic and Treatment Psychiatric Service of Pisa was a touching tribute to Dr. Capovani. The minute of silence and the laying of flowers symbolized the respect and admiration that her colleagues and friends had for her. It was a moment to reflect on her life and the impact she had on those around her.
