Obey, the international street artist, lands in Milan with his first solo exhibition in Italy.

Milan is dedicating an exhibition, the first of its kind in Italy, to one of the world’s greatest street artists, Shepard Fairey, also known as Obey. From May 16th to October 27th, the spaces of the Cathedral of Fabbrica del Vapore will host five paths that will lead the viewer to discover the most representative themes of Obey’s art, through a selection of works chosen by the artist. Alongside a collection of some of his most significant works, there will also be numerous unique and unpublished pieces.

Obey – to obey – is the word that Shepard Fairey chose as his stage name in a provocative way, inviting the observer to develop their own critical sense and to disobey social conventions when necessary. In the “Peace and Justice” section, works such as “Defend Dignity” will be on display. This image played a central role in the “We The People” campaign in 2017 and was used by protesters during the protests for a more inclusive America.

Shepard Fairey has also taken a stand in favor of minorities through works such as “Embrace Justice,” “Muhammad Ali,” and “Voting Rights are Human Rights,” all of which can be seen at the exhibition. Another section of the show is dedicated to the environment. With “Paint it Black,” the artist denounces an increasingly polluted Earth, painted black, and suggests a better use of renewable energy sources. In the “Music” section, the artist pays homage to legends like Chuck D, Bob Marley, and Joe Strummer, reminding viewers of their values and messages.

The exhibition also includes several album covers, known as Hpm (hand-painted multiples), which the artist created as if they were vinyl covers for his favorite artists. Emblematic of the “New Works” section are pieces such as “Swan Song” and “Icon Stencil with Flames Study.”

These and other unpublished works, produced in 2024, are displayed and presented to the public for the first time at this exhibition. Finally, Shepard Fairey will gift the city of Milan with his first mural in Italy in the Gallaratese neighborhood at Via Adolfo Consolini 26. It will be inaugurated on May 22nd and will have peace as its theme.

Milan is thrilled to welcome Shepard Fairey and his groundbreaking art to the city. The exhibition promises to be a unique opportunity to delve into the world of Obey and experience the power of street art firsthand. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary event that combines activism, creativity, and beauty in one place.
