Matthew Gray Gubler, the talented actor, writer, illustrator, and director, has recently ventured into the world of children’s literature with his debut book. The multitalented artist, known for his roles in films such as “Alvin and the Chipmunks” (2007), “Criminal Minds” (2005), and “(500) Days of Summer” (2009), has been awarded the Strega Ragazze e Ragazzi prize for Best Debut Book of 2024. Gubler’s book, titled “Rumple Buttercup,” has been translated by Sante Bandirali and has received critical acclaim.

The winner was announced by Stefano Petrocchi, the director of the Maria e Goffredo Bellonci Foundation, during a special event at the Bookstock Arena of the Turin International Book Fair. Unfortunately, Gubler could not be present in person but sent a video message expressing his gratitude. He was presented with a plaque and a cash prize offered by Strega Alberti Benevento. The translator also received an equally prestigious award sponsored by BolognaFiere.

“Rumple Buttercup” is described as a literary gem filled with poetry, creativity, and humor that resonates with both children and adults. Gubler’s simple yet tender writing style allows him to explore complex themes such as friendship, self-discovery, and embracing one’s unique qualities. The book has captivated readers with its ability to evoke emotions and celebrate individual differences.

During the Turin Book Fair, the finalists for the 6+, 8+, and 11+ age categories were also announced. In the 6+ category, authors Peter Carnavas, Dave Eggers, and Jarvis are competing for the prize. For the 8+ category, Annalisa Camilli, Maddalena Vaglio Tanet, and Edward Van de Vendel are the finalists. Finally, in the 11+ category, authors Katya Balen, Adam Gidwitz, and Kelly Yang have been nominated.

The winners in each category will be selected by a panel of 318 young jurors from schools, libraries, and reading groups in Italy and abroad. This year, there are 82 more jurors than in the previous edition, totaling 4,650 students. The awards ceremony will take place in Rome in December during Più Libri Più Liberi, the National Fair of Small and Medium Publishing.
